Therapy Dog Training Workshop

Taught by Cynthia Hinckley, founder & president of Bright Spot Therapy Dogs, Inc.

The BEGINNER WORKSHOP will cover topics such as:

  • What makes a good therapy dog
  • How to work with your dog as a therapy team
  • What types of facilities and programs are offered

The basic skills and techniques necessary to begin therapy dog work will be introduced and there will be training time to learn proper greeting methods, as well as an introduction to various hospital or nursing home equipment. In addition, there will be ample time for Q&A and all attendees will receive handouts and learn what steps to take next to become a certified therapy dog team.  If you have ever wanted to train your dog to be a therapy dog, or if you have ever wondered what the work entailed, please come join us for this fun and informative workshop.

The ADVANCED WORKSHOP builds on the skills covered in the BEGINNERS WORKSHOP and introduces techniques for handling specific types of patients and situations.  Advanced skills and training commands are introduced and practiced in class.  Time will be given to address questions and concerns that may have come up in your visits or while practicing.  All attendees will receive handouts with tips and techniques for further practice.

This is a two hour workshop.    The fee is $50.00.

Polite Greeting

Does your dog launch like a rocket when greeting new people?  Does she leave paw-prints on your work clothes when you greet her upon coming home?  You need this intensive two hour workshop that teaches you and your dog the skills to stop that jumping!

Polite Walking

Does your dog walk YOU down the street?  Have your daily walks turned games of “tug-of-war”? Teach your dog to be a pleasant walking companion.  Learn the skills you need to walk your dog on leash without pulling.

 Coming When Called

We’d all like to take long outdoor walks with our dogs but……

Are you worried that “Rover” is going to run off; never to be seen again?  You’re not alone.  It takes practice but you too can have a dog that will cheerfully return to you when called.  Come learn the “secrets” of a solid recall so your dog will come EVERY TIME you call.

This is a two hour workshop.  The fee is $50.00.  Some experience with clicker training is encouraged but not required.

Outdoor Etiquette

Do you find yourself apologizing for your dog’s behavior during walks in public?  Want your dog to behave well in the real world; not just in your house?  This workshop will concentrate on several essential behaviors that every well behaved dog-about-town needs.  We will address the following:  walking politely on leash; coming when called; politely greeting other dogs and people;  “leave it”.

This is a two hour workshop.  The fee is $50.00.  Some experience with clicker training is encouraged but not required.

New Dog in the House

New dog in the house? Come and learn all you need to know to begin your new family member’s life in your home.  Discussion about housebreaking, crate training, puppy proofing, and how to set proper rules boundaries and limitations.  This will be a combination of dog-training basics (we will teach basic commands) and discussion about common issues – house training, biting, chewing, barking etc.  Open to all new dog owners – puppies, rescues, shelter dogs. Friendly dogs only please.
